5 Things to Know About Getting Braces With Missing Teeth

Is Invisalign BPA-free? What the Research Says

Many adults assume that missing teeth put braces or Invisalign out of reach. It's one of the most common reasons people talk themselves out of a consultation before they even come in. The reality is that missing teeth, gaps, and existing dental work are situations we deal with all the time — and in many cases, orthodontic treatment is not only possible but actually part of getting the dental work done right. Here are five things worth knowing.

1. Missing Teeth Don't Disqualify You From Treatment

Tooth loss happens for many different reasons. Sometimes it's an injury. Sometimes it's decay or gum disease that went untreated for too long. And sometimes it's simply genetic — the most common teeth people are born without are the lateral incisors, the ones flanking your two front teeth, and the wisdom teeth in the back. Whatever the reason, missing teeth don't automatically rule out braces or clear aligners. Treatment can go one of two directions depending on what you're trying to accomplish. If the goal is to close the gap so your smile looks complete, we can gradually move the surrounding teeth together. If the plan is to eventually replace the missing tooth with an implant, bridge, or crown, we can work to keep that space exactly where it needs to be so the dental work can go in correctly. Both are real options, and we'll help you figure out which one fits your situation.

2. Braces Can Set You Up for Better Dental Work Later

Here's something a lot of patients don't realize: when you lose a tooth and leave the gap untreated, the neighboring teeth start drifting into the gap. Over time, that shifting can close off space that your dentist needs to place an implant or fit a bridge properly. By the time you're ready for that dental work, the window may have narrowed significantly.

Orthodontic treatment can stop that drift or reverse it, ensuring the space is preserved and the position is corrected before any restorative work is done. We coordinate directly with your dentist so both sides of the plan are aligned from the start. In some cases, if all that's needed is maintaining a gap and there are no other alignment concerns, a space maintainer can do the job without committing to full braces. We'll tell you honestly which route makes more sense.

3. Existing Crowns, Bridges, and Implants Are Not a Problem

Having crowns, bridges, or implants already in place is more common than you'd think among adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment. It changes how we plan things, but it doesn't change whether treatment is possible.

Dental implants are a little different from natural teeth in one important way: they're fused to the jawbone, so they can't be repositioned the way your other teeth can. In practice, that means we move the teeth around the implant rather than moving the implant itself. It requires more careful mapping of the treatment plan, but it's something we do regularly.

Crowns and bridges need to be accounted for during bracket placement or aligner design, but there are techniques for handling both that protect the existing work throughout treatment. If you have restorations and want to know what treatment might look like for you specifically, the best first step is a complimentary consultation where we can take a look and give you a real answer.

4. The Timing of Treatment Matters More Than You Might Think

When patients plan to have both an implant and orthodontic treatment, the order in which they occur makes a real difference. An implant fuses directly to the jawbone. It doesn't move. So if teeth still need to shift around it after placement, that becomes a much harder problem to solve.

Doing orthodontics first gives us room to work. Every tooth is placed where it needs to be, and then the implant is inserted with everything already in place around it. The end result is cleaner, and the dental work is easier for your dentist to execute.

That said, if you already have implants and haven't had orthodontic treatment yet, you still have options. We regularly work with patients in that situation. The earlier all the providers involved communicate with each other, the more options are on the table.

5. Older Dental Work Doesn't Lock You Out Either

Most crowns and bridges have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. Implants, with good care, can last considerably longer. If you had dental work placed years ago and have been putting off orthodontics, or if you know your restorations are getting to the end of their lifespan and will need to be replaced, treatment is still very much possible.

In situations where existing restorations are due for replacement soon, we usually recommend completing orthodontic treatment first, then placing new restorations to fit the corrected smile. That way, the new dental work is built around the final result, not around whatever the alignment was before treatment.

Can I get braces or Invisalign if I'm missing teeth?

Yes, missing teeth don't disqualify you from treatment. Depending on your goals, we either move teeth together to close the gap or hold the space so your dentist can place an implant, bridge, or crown later. We'll figure out which approach fits your situation at your consultation.

What if I already have crowns, bridges, or implants?

None of those rule out treatment. Implants are fused to the bone so they stay put — we move the teeth around them instead. Crowns and bridges factor into how we design the treatment plan, but they don't get in the way of completing it.

Will my existing dental work be safe during treatment?

Yes. We account for it from day one. Everything already in your mouth is factored into the plan before we move anything.
