How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
We lift stains from your teeth by applying a bleaching gel to the enamel. This gel seeps into the pores within the outer layers of the teeth and breaks apart the tiny staining particles that have become lodged there over time. As the particles disintegrate, the pores are able to reflect more light, making your teeth look whiter and brighter.
At Petrous Orthodontics, we love to do our research. After lots (and lots!) of it, we chose a whitening solution brand that Dr. Petrous believes is the best on the market. Our solution is a prescription only carbamide peroxide which is kosher, Vegan, and gluten free. Dr. Petrous has used this solution successfully with thousands of patients, including himself!

Common Questions About Teeth Whitening
Your well-being is of paramount importance to us at Petrous Orthodontics. There has been much research that has confirmed that professional teeth whitening done under the supervision of a doctor is safe and effective, and does not damage tooth enamel whatsoever.
While some at home whiteners can be safe and relatively inexpensive, professional whitening has many advantages. Professional whitening solutions are prescription strength, meaning they have a much more dramatic result in comparison to the weaker over the counter varieties, Also, professional grade whitening is tested and proven.
There's no special prep required for your whitening appointment, but you do need to protect your teeth for a few days after the procedure.
For two days after you wear your whitening trays, your teeth will be extra-susceptible to staining. We recommend treating your teeth like a crisp, brand new white T-shirt, and avoiding any foods and drinks that would stain it: red wine, coffee, dark colas, teas, any candy that turns your tongue crazy colors, and berries.
Mild sensitivity to hot or cold liquids may occur after treatment, but usually resolves within 1-2 days. If you do experience sensitivity, simply take a couple days off before your next application. Take over the counter pain medicine as needed.
Finally, put that butt out! Smoking hinders long-term results.
We're happy to help you elevate your smile with whitening even if you don’t have or don’t need orthodontic treatment!
Unfortunately, not everybody is a good candidate for whitening. Patients with dark grey staining tend not to respond as well to whitening and keep in mind that dental fillings, crowns and bridges don’t respond to whitening whatsoever. The best way to find out if you're a good candidate for whitening is through a free consultation. We can visit with you virtually or in the office.
