Retainer Instructions – Braces

How to take care of your retainer

RETAINER WEAR IS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAIN YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE

To keep your smile looking at its best, you’ll have to wear a retainer to preserve your results. Retainers are needed to limit changes in tooth position after your treatment ends. All retainers are custom made for each patient and can be removable or glued-in.

TYPES OF RETAINERS

Removable Retainers

Hawley Retainers

Hawleys, also known as a “traditional retainers” typically include a metal wire that surrounds the front teeth, which is attached to an acrylic arch that rests in the palate and/or tongue space. Thesewires may need to be adjusted over time to improve the fit.

Essix Retainers

Essix are “Invisalign-style” retainers that look similar to clear aligners and offer a more esthetic alternative to the Hawley retainers. Each of these clear retainers fits over all of your teeth.

Fixed Retainers

Bonded retainers

A bonded retainer, or fixed retainer, is a wire glued behind the upper or lower incisors. There are pros and cons of each type of retainer which will be discussed with you after you finish orthodontic treatment with us.
