Dr. Jerek Petrous, Dr. John Marx, and the professionals at Petrous Orthodontics are used to advising their Warren, MI patients about food restrictions during orthodontic treatment. And even though patients undergoing treatment with Invisalign have less restrictive dietary guidelines than those being treated with traditional metal braces, what foods can you eat with Invisalign?
Eating With Invisalign
Everything’s on the menu. And while certain foods can damage traditional metal braces, thats not an issue for the Invisalign system because it’s made to be removed for eating. However when a patient progresses to a new set of aligners, eating softer foods like pasta, eggs, or yogurt can ease any discomfort associated with chewing that might occur during the adjustment period. Also noteworthy, sticky or sugary foods can cling to the surfaces of the teeth and promote tooth decay. We at Petrous Orthodontics aren’t saying that you can’t eat sticky or sugary foods, but if you do we can’t stress enough that you brush and floss your teeth before refitting your Invisalign trays.
Drinking With Invisalign
We at Petrous Orthodontics also encourage our patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with Invisalign to remove their trays before consuming liquids that might stain the appliance and/or hot liquids (e.g. red wine and/or hot tea). The clear aligners used in this system should stay clear, and because they are made of a thermoplastic they are sensitive to heat; hot liquids like hot tea may distort the shape of the aligners and affect its ability to perform as prescribed.
Overview
The results of this system are priceless! But it takes a little work to get there. Remember: it is important to remove your aligners for eating, drinking liquids that stain or that are hot, brushing and flossing your teeth, and for cleaning your trays. Dr. Petrous, Dr. Marx, and the team at Petrous Orthodontics love helping their patients achieve the most functional, straightest, and healthiest smiles possible using Invisalign.
